The Karla Yearwood Memorial Foundation (a GA tax-exempt 501c-3 organization) was started in memory of my mom, Karla, who lost her 3½ year battle with ovarian cancer, the deadliest of all gynecologic cancers, on April 6, 2005.
Ovarian Cancer, occurring in 1 out of every 55 women, is the leading cause of cancer death among U.S. women; 3 out of 4 women diagnosed will not survive the disease and approximately 50 percent of all women diagnosed will not live 5 years from diagnosis.
My mom was such an amazing woman and was an inspiration to all those that knew and loved her. She was not only my Mom but also my best friend. I treasured every moment with her in those last few years and even look back on her journey with cancer with such fond memories…despite her illness. She had such a positive, upbeat way of dealing with life…and death and she lived her life to make a difference in the lives of those around her. Her mission is our mission… We want to make a difference. Raising awareness not only among women, but among the healthcare industry as a whole to ovarian cancer's subtle symptoms can mean the difference.
